1. Historischer Rückblick

Historical overview

Auf diesen Seiten stelle ich einige historische Informationen zu meinen Bemalungen von deutschen Flugzeugen der so genannten "Sturmböcke" des Jagdgeschwaders 3 "Udet" vor, die in diesen Tarnschemen während des Jahres 1944 im Einsatz gegen die amerikanischen Bomberströme zum Einsatz kamen. Diese speziell gepanzerten Focke Wulf 190 A8/R2 Flugzeuge verzichteten auf einen Teil ihrer Standardbewaffnung, um dafür im Cockpitbereich und Haubenbereich stärker gepanzert gegen die heftigen Abwehrfeuer der Bomber gewappnet zu sein.

Nicht die Begleitjäger, sondern nur die "dicken Autos", die viermotorigen B 17 "Flying Fortress" und B-24 "Liberator" waren ihre Ziele! Um die flinken und zahlreichen Jäger mussten sich die Jagdgeschwader mit den kleineren Bf-109 Varianten  kümmern, damit die gepanzerten Ritter, die "Sturmböcke" unbehelligt an die Bomberströme heran kamen und mit ihren Bordwaffen und speziellen Bewaffnungen so viele Bomber, "Viermots" genannt, wie möglich abschossen!

On these pages I present some historical information's to my paintworks for German fighters assigned to the "Sturmbock" Squads of Jagdgeschwader 3 "Udet", that was fighting 1944 against the heavily armed U.S. bomber streams over Germany. These special armoured Focke Wulf 190 A8/R2 fighter planes changed a part of their standard weaponry into a protected cover over the cockpit and windscreen area in order to withstand the heavy gunfire of the bomber gunners.

Not the covering pursuit fighters, the main goal were the "dicken Autos", the four engine B 17 "Flying Fortress" and B 24 "Liberator"! The protecting agile and later countless fighters were the task of the Jagdgeschwader mainly equipped with the smaller Bf-109 variants, they have to fight the way for the armoured Knights the "Sturmböcke", so they got their chance to attack and shoot down as much as possible of the so-called "Viermots".

Die IV. Sturmgruppe des JG 3 mit ihren Focke Wulf 190 "Sturmböcken" entstand im April 1944 nach Befehl Generalmajors Adolf Galland aus den bestehenden Einheiten der IV./ JG 3 und der kompletten, im Oktober 1943 gegründeten Sturmstaffel 1. Die Einheiten des JG 3 gaben ihre Bf-109 G ab, und erhielten im May 1944 ihre Focke Wulf 190-Sturmflugzeuge mit folgenden Staffelfarben:

The IV. Sturmgruppe of JG 3 with their Focke Wulf 190 "Sturmböcken" was formed in April 1944 out of the already existing units of IV./JG 3 Units and the complete Sturmstaffel 1 founded October 1943 by order of General Major Adolf Galland. The units gave up their Bf-109 G's in May 1944 in return now equipped with the Focke Wulf-Assault fighters separate by the following Staffel identification colours:

Hier ein Auszug aus dem Decal-Bogen der Eagle Editions, aus dem die Ausführung der Adlerschwingen, die Motorhaubenbemalung und die Bemalung der Flächenansätze zu ersehen ist. Jerry Crandall (Eagle Editions) hat sehr viele Zeitzeugen und ehemalige Piloten des JG 3 befragt und umfangreiches Foto-Material gesammelt, um diese Bemalung als gesichert annehmen zu können.

Seine Informationen entstammen außerdem aus ausführlichen Gesprächen mit dem ehemaligen Gruppenkommandeur der IV. Gruppe des JG 3, Wilhelm Moritz, den er mehre Male in Kanada traf.

Die Ziffern der 12. Staffel sind komplett gelb ausgeführt und hatten nach Analyse von Fotografien und Interviews keine schwarzen Einfassungen, während bei anderen Staffeln die taktischen Ziffern und Symbole mit farblicher Umrandung ausgeführt wurden.

Here's a Review out of the Decal Set EC #8 of Eagle Editions, from that you clearly can see the form and final execution of the paintworks on the cowl, the eagle wings on the fuselage and the wings design continued with a small stripe on the wing roots. Jerry Crandall (Eagle Editions) was able to gather much of his information from former pilots of JG 3 and from photograph resources he collected over the years.

He also had the opportunity to interview Mr. Wilhelm Moritz, former Gruppenkommandeur of IV. Group JG 3 several time in Canada.

The tactical numbers of the 12^th echelon are completely yellow that differs from the normal procedure of outlining them in a separate colour. Other echelons of the IV. Group painted these tactical marks in the normal way.

Quelle/Source: Focke Wulf Jagdflugzeuge Fw 190 A Fw 190 "Dora" Ta 152 H, Seite/page 347	Auf dem Bild ist die äußere Zusatzpanzerung der "Sturmböcke" dargestellt. Diese bestand aus den 30 mm starken Panzerglasaufsätzen im Windschutz, und als so genannte "Scheuklappen" angebrachte Panzerung auf der Schiebehaube, sowie den 5 mm starken Stahlblechen unter der Kabine und dem Windschutz! Beliebt waren die "Scheuklappen" bei den Piloten überhaupt nicht, da sie die Sicht sehr stark einschränkten. Deshalb sind diese in der Folge von den Piloten wieder abmontiert worden.   Shown on the picture are the additional outer armour of the "Sturmböcke". It consists out of 30 mm thick plates of bullet-proof glass at the windscreen and as so-called "blinders" mounted on the hood. In addition there are 5 mm thick steel plates screwed under the cockpit and the windscreen! The pilots disliked the Blinkers because of the reduce sight, so later on many was removed by the flight personnel.
	Da in IL-2: Forgotten Battles die Zusatzpanzerung NICHT modelliert ist, habe ich diese nach der obigen Buchskizze aufgemalt. Hier seht ihr die Realisierung auf dem linken Bildschirmausdruck an der Bemalung der "Gelben 3"!   Because the additional Armour is NOT modelled in IL-2: Forgotten Battles, I have painted it as shown in the screenshot left on the paint scheme of the "Yellow 3"!

Bemerkung:

Leider gibt es in IL-2 Forgotten Battles kein Krebsgerät, dass von der IV./JG 3 verwendet wurde, deshalb seht ihr hier auf den Bilder teilweise die 21 cm Werfer angebracht. Die simulieren natürlich nicht den Gebrauch dieser Waffe sind aber die einzige Raketenbewaffnung in IL-2 Forgotten Battles :(

Remark:

Because there is no "Krebsgerät" available you should use the 21 cm Mortars if designing Sturmgruppen missions as these are the only rockets which could be choosen for the Focke Wulf series. It is not historical correct but the only way to use rockets agains the heavy bombers :(
